Workplace Strategies that Enhance Health and Wellness

Something that we often do not take much time to think about are the environments in which we are working. But we should probably be taking them a whole lot more seriously.

In her article “Workplace Strategies that Enhance Performance, Health and Wellness,” Leigh Stringer writes,

“Smart organizations understand that their primary goal is to enhance the performance of their people. In a knowledge work economy, people are the engine that keep companies growing, adapting, improving and innovating. Not surprisingly, thoughtful workplace design can be a powerful tool for supporting employee performance. And a collateral benefit is that what typically supports productivity also enhances employee health and wellness – it’s all interrelated. Given the nature of today’s work processes, how can the workplace better support human performance? How can the workplace support all of the different activities involved with knowledge work – things like collaboration, creativity, innovation, deep thinking and mentorship?”

She goes in depth on 10 fundamental design elements in your office that are having a daily impact on your employees’—impacting everything from productivity and energy levels, to concentration, creativity, and health—and what to do about it. Knowing these things, we can design spaces that have the humans who live and work in them in mind, or, as we like to say, conform to humans and not the other way around.
